Hummingbirds Pictures - Description
Hummingbirds are remarkable for their wonderful manner of flying and ability to hang in midair, like helicopters. This is due to the structure of their wings, which is different from that of other birds. There is no mobile joint between the elbow and wrist bones.
The wings move in an alternative figure-eight fashion, so that every up stroke of one wing is promptly made up for by the down stroke of the other. That makes flight sort of gliding and balanced while extending the bird's flying skills to backward and upward flying as well.
When flying, hummingbirds produce a characteristic humming noise. That is because they can wave their wings unbelievably fast, making at an average 50-70 beats per minute. Highly evolved chest muscles allow humming birds to make up to 170 wing beats per second in power drive, thus considerably exceeding the number of beats in a relatively calm state. The absence of down feathers reduces weight, which also substantially contributes to speed flight capacity.
Hummingbirds are pretty aggressive when it comes to defending their nests. They have sharp needle shaped bills. If a female hummingbird spots a potential predator, she rapidly uses her bill against the enemy.
Sophisticated fledge coloring is another reason for people's interest. This is the only bird that has the capability of changing colors. That is due to the structure of the feather. The color is defined by the amount of melanin granules and microscopic air bubbles. On dull days, when the sun is not shining, the birds appear either brown or reddish brown. On sunny days sun light is refracted in the air bubbles and then dispersed into different colors of the spectrum.
The visible color depends on the ray fall angle and the location of the bubbles. Reflected light may be either dulled or intensified as it falls in with that reflected by other bubbles. For that reason hummingbirds can appear in innumerable varieties of the mother-of-pearl.
Hummingbirds Pictures - Feeding
Hummingbirds feed on flower nectar and insects. They consume nectar by way of using their sharp and elongated bills and tongues. The tongue is a pair of fringe-edged tubular structures. The fringy edges provide firm contact with the food and allow nectar to be sucked into the mouth.
Hummingbirds are extremely fast and therefore, energy output actually exceeds the amount of calories. Nectar is rich in carbohydrates, and it is for energy reasons that hummingbirds take it. The amount of food they consume exceeds their body weight. Heart rate reaches 400-500 beats per minute. In order to maintain such a frantic way of life, hummingbirds have to permanently seek food.
